Getting a sense of style out of a rental property can be a big task. You might not have the space, or you might not have much to play with. You might not have a garden, or you might not have much of a living room! You might not have much of anything, but as more people are turning to rental properties because that’s all they can afford, you have a right to make some style out of where you spend a third of your time! Here are some quick tips, and don’t forget to ask the landlord’s permission!
Creating A Lovely Ambiance…
It doesn’t have to be difficult, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money, but you can get a company to add some lighting if you have the budget. Go online to a site like www.electricalconnection.org and look at lights like fluorescents. You don’t need to turn your home into a mass of floodlights to get a lovely ambiance; you can install a dimmer to tone the lighting down to an intimate level, especially if you are planning on having dinner guests over on a regular basis. The ambiance doesn’t require a lot of redecorating either. You can use the lack of space to create a cozy setting and have soft music playing. It’s all about what you do with the atmosphere.
Disguising Items…
If you’ve got a lot of old items or essentials that you can't afford to replace, you can go for the vintage approach of “dressing up” these things. Use lampshades as curtain holders, or in the bathroom use doilies to cover up the waste paper basket. Thrift stores are a lifesaver when it comes to this. You can get a whole heap of items for a low cost, and if some aren’t suitable, you haven’t spent a lot of money.
Get A Centerpiece…
One that gets people talking. Depending on your taste, go for a piece of art or a painting, or even a sculpture. If you plan on holding gatherings in your home and you lack in space, you will need to get something that gets tongues wagging. It’s a little way to keep the conversation going and keep the momentum up.
Try A New Style…
Thrift stores, again, are a big help when it comes to finding a whole new set of decoration ideas. It’s amazing in these stores you can get a whole new set of vintage teacups, or even whiskey decanters and some big style books to go on a coffee table. The old styles are, in fact, the new ones. The rise in popularity in vintage and 1950s retro means that people are scouring the thrift stores for a real bargain. Old vinyl records add a layer of indie cool to a dank apartment.
Just because you're renting, it doesn’t mean you have to scrimp on style. There are ways around making the place your own without knocking down walls and hammering nails everywhere. Get creative!
These are great ways to make your rental nicer! Thanks for sharing. :) I have never owned a home, so I know what it is like to live in a rental! I always try to make the ambiance as homey as possible. :)
