How To Pack Up Your Home For Your House Move

You have sold your home and purchased another so all you have to do is pack up and head off! This can be when your problems start. When you have spent a lot of time and effort setting up your home the way you like it and designing your kid’s bedrooms to be perfect for them, it is understandable that you are reluctant about packing it all away. However, leaving everything until the last minute is not going to help.

Who can help you?

You do not have to do this all by yourself. There are movers who can assist with all stages of your house move. They can help with the latest packing and crating equipment to ensure that your precious possessions arrive in your new home undamaged. They can also help with packing up and can even store some items on a temporary basis for you.

Start your packing early
It will take you a lot longer than you expect. If you pack one box a day, it will take you two whole months to pack up a big house! Smaller homes would take around a month.
Always start with the room that you use least, for example, a spare bedroom. Then one of your living rooms or a study. The garage, loft, and basement can be completed early in your packing schedule but leave tools out where you can get at them easily. You may need them to remove items such as the fridge or the washing machine.
Don’t try to do too much at once. Always do one room at a time and label everything very clearly. Don’t just label what room it came from. Be specific and label as ‘books’ or ‘toys’ as well. Kids will love helping to label boxes and can draw pictures if they like. This can help to keep them amused for hours!
Declutter as you go. For every item, ask yourself if it really needs to come with you. If the answer is ‘no’ either give it away or try to sell it. Hold a garage or a yard sale before you leave.
Pack in a systematic way
Boxes can only hold so much. Each box should not weigh more than 30 pounds. If they are any heavier they become difficult to handle and can damage other items during transport. Choose large packing boxes for light items (such as fluffy toys) and small boxes for heavy items (such as books).
Everything needs to be packed securely in the boxes, if things can move around easily they are more likely to get broken. You can fill empty gaps with newspapers or packing papers. Bubble wrap is very useful!
Mark out the heavier boxes with a warning such as ‘Hazard: Heavyweight’ so that they do not get placed on top of fragile items.
With just a few sensible precautions you can make sure that your possessions arrive at your new home in one piece!

  1. We are planning to move in 3 years which to many people may seem like more than enough time! But, logistically it's going to be a nightmare! We have lived where we are now for over 25 years so there is a lot of stuff that has been "collected" over the years. I have been at a loss as to know where to even start so thanks for the advise.
