4 Additions that Will Improve Any Backyard

Our backyards are designed to be personal oases. We may be tempted to pour a fortune into making our backyard look like an English garden, civic playground or entertaining area good enough for a resort. However, you don’t have to go that far to make your backyard a more attractive, relaxing place. Here are four additions that will improve any backyard.

A Pergola

A pergola is an open frame that typically has a lattice roof. It provides shade without blocking out the sun entirely. It allows air to flow through in a way that sunrooms cannot achieve. You can weave ivy or flowering plants into the lattice so that it eventually grows into a natural sun-shade. When they bloom, you’ll be surrounded by the scent and sight of flowers. A side benefit of pergolas is that they’re cheaper to build than gazebos, and you can throw a canvas or tarp over it for better protection from the elements when required. And it gives you a degree of privacy without cutting you off from the world. You may also be able to put in a pergola without the same permits and permissions required for a deck or gazebo.

A Fire Pit

A fire pit lets you safely have a roaring fire or modest blaze going. It is far safer than tiki torches, and it is much cheaper than the outdoor fireplaces that are all the rage. You don’t even have to rip out your patio to gain the effect since you can get a fire “bowl” or metal fire pit you could move around until you find just the right place. Depending on the model, you could burn wood, charcoal or propane to create a warm, glowing fire.

Electric Smoker

Fire pits are more suited to making smores than barbecuing, but you can offset that by buying an electric smoker. Electric smokers are ideal for curing meat and will really bring out the taste of briskets and other large cuts of meat. A nice electric smoker can make a great addition to any backyard. Read electric smoker reviews at electricsmokercenter.com to find a smoker for the food you like to prepare in the timeframe you need.

A Storage Shed

A storage shed may be the solution to the pile of tools by the back door that is an eyesore but needs to be protected from the elements. It certainly provides an opportunity to clean up the yard by giving tools, pool toys, and equipment a set storage place.

A Sunken Patio

A sunken patio provides a measure of privacy and clear visual segregation of different uses of the backyard. You do need to be careful of drainage and a roof over it doesn’t eliminate the need to plan for how you’ll handle water accumulation. If you decide to put in a sunken patio, it is an excellent place to put a fire pit.

Conclusion

All of these additions will improve your backyard and make it more functional. Whether it’s a fire pit, smoker, or sunken patio, these additions will give your backyard more personality, instantly.
