When it comes to hair, many of us tend to stay safe and stick to one simple cut and color for years on end. But why do this when there are so many astounding styles and shades to pick from? It’s good to mix things up every once in a while, and you don’t need to wait for a breakup to gain the newfound confidence to do this! Let’s start with short styles and make our way through to longer look, as we scan some signature haircuts that you might want to consider yourself!
The Pixie Cut
The pixie cut is a daring hairstyle and generally reserved for the more confident among us. Why? Well, many of us use our hair as a kind of failsafe shield. Something that can detract attention from our faces on days when we aren’t feeling quite up to scratch. The pixie cut is short and hides nothing. The main benefit of this daring androgynous style tends to be that it comes hand in hand with extremely low maintenance tresses. Rather than spending hours drying and styling your locks after every shower, you can tousle them with a towel, and you’re good to go! It really is as simple as that. Take a look at celebrities who have worked the look to a tee, such as Emma Watson, Zoe Kravitz, and Cara Delevingne for inspiration.
The Bob
The bob comes in all sorts of shapes and styles. From the concave or graduated bob to the long bob or “lob,” there’s bound to be one that will suit your needs and style. Generally speaking, it is relatively short hairstyle where the hair is cut in a straight line around the head from ear to ear. It can be straight, wavy, or curly. To find the right kind of bob for you, consult your hairstylist, who will be able to give you more personal advice.
Bangs
Bangs, otherwise known as a fringe, entail cutting the front of your hair short to cover your forehead. Now, you can achieve this look yourself. But unless you’re a trained hairdresser and braver than most, it’s best to avoid a DIY attempt at crafting this look. Why? Well, it’s extremely hard to determine how long the piece of hair will be when cutting hair yourself. After all, you can’t see well, as your hair is pulled over your eyes. Secondly, it’s even more difficult to get a blunt, straight line. Wonky bangs are a complete no-go and can take a long time to grow out. However, with professional help, this can be a complete statement piece and form a part of your signature look. It’s particularly good for those who suffer from bad skin or deep lines and wrinkles on their foreheads, as the hair easily covers these minor flaws.

Braids
Like bobs, braids come in various styles. Being able to style each will entail learning unique techniques, but each that you add to your repertoire merely serves to allow you to casually create more hairstyles. Stay subtle with a single or double plait starting from the nape of your neck. Alternatively, you can switch things up with French or Dutch braids. These employ a similar technique to one another. The only difference between the two is that French braids are inverted, while Dutch braids sit on top of your head. Then come the newly popular fishtail or “mermaid” braids. While the previous styles incorporate three strands of hair per braid, the fishtail braid requires four, so can be a little more fiddly but is worth the extra time and effort. All braids tend to stay at best when you haven’t washed your hair for a couple of days. This is because it will have more texture and will be less likely to slip from the position it is placed.
Space Buns
Space buns have soared in popularity over the past year or so. Why? Well, they’re quirky, they’re cute, and they’re a refreshing change from the classic single messy bun. They are also really fast to style. You simply need to part your hair into a center parting, then gather each side into its own messy bun placed on the top of the head. You’ll feel fresh from the nineties in next to no time! If you have fine or particularly silky hair, you might benefit from a little backcombing. Like braids, space buns are also best when you haven’t washed your hair the same day. Save it for messy hair days!
These are just a few hairstyles from a seemingly endless list. So give each a try and see how you like it. If nothing suits your fancy, there are plenty more out there. Finding your favorite will just take a little persistence and practice.
