Stress is a common part of life for many people around the world, and it comes in all different forms. For instance, you might be experiencing stress at work because you’ve got a lot of deadlines to meet in a short space of time, or perhaps it might be your home life that is causing you issues. Whatever it is you are experiencing, too much stress on your body can have a serious impact on your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, which is why it is important to find ways to get your stress under control. In order to help you do just that, here are some tips on getting through some of the most common causes of stress in modern society.
Work Related Stress
Stress at work is something that most people go through at some point or another, but it’s when the stressful days start to become more and more frequent that your health starts to take a toll. When you can’t cope with the pressures of your workload, or when you are facing conflict with others within your work environment, it starts to have a negative impact on your mental and emotional health. Not only does this make it difficult to be productive, but it can also bleed into other areas of your life, such as your home life and relationships.
To combat this, try and tackle all of your work-related issues head-on, rather than leaving them to fester and gradually get worse. For example, if your workload is too much for you, ask if you can pass on a few responsibilities to someone else and explain your reasoning; or if you are having issues with someone in your office, politely as that you both find a moment to discuss it and come to a resolution, or take the matter higher if necessary.
Relationship problems and divorce
Your relationship is often the first place you will turn to for support if you are going through a difficult life period, so what do you do when your relationship is the cause of your stress? Every couple is bound to experience some kind of difficulties along the road, though some will be more strenuous than others. If you’ve found that your relationship is going through more and more troubled waters, then perhaps it might be time to take action. Try and open up a verbal dialogue with your partner about the issues you are facing, as the better you can communicate, the more likely it is that you will be able to sort through your issues. You might find that getting some mediation and counseling will help you to address your issues more openly, and this will also help stop disagreements turning into arguments (read more about relationship counseling).
If you have reached the stage where divorce is on the table, then it is important to try and be as amicable and civil with one another as you can during this time; not only for the sake of both of your wellbeing, but also for anyone else who might be involved, such as your children. In situations where you and your ex-partner struggle to communicate calmly, it might be best for the both of you to communicate through third parties, such as your attorneys. However, if you have children between you, then make sure that you can be as compassionate to one another as possible so that your children don’t feel as though they are caught in the middle.
Becoming a single parent
Parenting is hard enough when you have someone to co-parent with, but if you are managing as a single parent, life can become even more stressful. Whether you’re new to life as a single parent, or whether it’s what you’ve always known, it doesn’t make the task any less challenging. The important thing to remember is that you’re not alone and that it’s okay to reach out for help. In some cultures, it takes the whole village to raise a child, so there is no shame in reaching out for help if you need it.
Be kind to yourself, and put your own health and wellbeing first sometimes too, because it is important that you are in your best shape possible so that you can give the most energy to your kids. Try and find ways to make your life easier, such as by creating a detailed weekly schedule for the household, including everything from meal planning, to household chores, and a daily schedule for the kids, as this will help you keep on track when you are trying to organize everything by yourself.
Difficult financial situations
Financial stress can come in a variety of different forms, from not being having enough money to pay the bills, to accumulating debt which you can’t manage, or finding yourself faced with unexpected expenses. Whatever your cause of financial stress, it can have a serious negative impact on lots of different areas on your life, from your health and wellbeing to your family relationships, which is why it is important to find ways to get it under control as soon as possible.
The first step in getting your finances under control is to create a budget which will help you to understand exactly when and where your money is being spent, and restrict it to manageable portions of money. This will also help you to save more money in the long run, in order to avoid being unable to cover unexpected expenses in the future, and also pay off any debts you might have accrued. If you think you might struggle to work out the best financial plan by yourself, then it may be worthwhile speaking to an accountant or financial planner, who can help you get your finances under control. They may also be able to set up repayment plans on your behalf to help you repay any borrowed money in manageable amounts, which will be one less weight on your shoulders. The most important thing is to make sure that you don’t fall back into bad habits, and just stick to living realistically within your means.
