Choosing a university course is a huge decision for
teenagers and one that can affect the rest of their lives. Not only is it a
major financial investment, it also helps prepare young people for their future
career. With that said, it’s important for parents to get involved with the
decision making process to help ease the pressure. A senior school in Surrey have put
together the following information for parents who are unsure how to help their
child determine which course is best.
Many students have a very clear understanding of what
they want to study at university and what field of work they’d like to move
into after. Others will benefit from some support from their parents to help
make the right decision. The simplest
way you can help is drive your child to lots of different university open days
so they that can get a feel for the different campuses etc. Be sure to ask the
tutors lots of questions during their visit.
If you’re unsure whether or not the course they
eventually choose is right for them, it would be wise to do lots of research to
figure out what sort of personality is required for the course in question. An
English Literature student, for example, will need to have a love for books and
be able to work independently, as it’s a predominantly essay-based subject. Ask
your teen plenty of questions to figure out if their intentions are
well-placed; are they choosing the course because they think they’ll be good at
it, enjoy it and eventually get a job in the field or are they choosing it
because their friends are also choosing it?
When choosing a university course, a lot goes into
making the decision. The most important thing to remember and to reiterate to
your child is that they should choose something that is right for them, rather
than choosing something just because it is at a highly regarded university.
