If you just bought one
of the houses for sale in Toronto, your budget is probably a bit tight, but if the
kitchen needs updating, the good news is that there are many DIY upgrades that
are likely to fit the bill, including these.
Change Up the Color
One of the most obvious
is to refresh the paint, but that simple change can make a major difference.
Many kitchens in homes that are over a decade old or so, we're painted country
style in shades of blue, but by repainting it in a warmer color like yellow, it
can provide a cheery updated feel. If the space is small, you might want to
consider a paler shade of yellow which can make it look better. Green is
another option for making it feel brighter and more spacious. It's also good as
an accent color on one wall or the cabinets for adding energy without being
overwhelming. And while you probably wouldn't want to paint it all red, a red
accent wall adds sophistication while stimulating the appetite, as houzz.com notes.
Update a Chrome Sink
It's not just the walls
that can be refreshed with paint, but a chrome sink too. All it takes is some
sandpaper and a cheap can of spray paint (designed for metal). That's a
fraction of what you'd pay for a whole new sink. Another option is to change
out the faucet with one that's more stylish.
Replace Light Fixtures
Replacing light fixtures
- even if it's only one, can really make a difference in the appearance of your
kitchen and you can find some very appealing options for well under $100.
Choose a chrome, rustic, or more upscale light fixture that matches the decor
you already have or the color of the room. You might want to think about accent
lights which not only add the visual interest they can make it easier to see
when preparing meals.
Switch Out Lightswitch
and Outlet Plates
Even replacing your
outlet and light switch plates, which doesn't cost much at all, can give a
whole new look to your kitchen. There are all sorts of options these days with
decorative, colorful outlet covers in bronze, chrome or even Steampunk.
Hang Up Shelves and Add
Interesting Decor and Other Items
Shelves can be used for
storage as well as adding all sorts of decor, plants, or attractive
kitchenware. Floating shelves look great and are good for displaying dishes and
glasses along with an artwork. For open spaces above the sink, place dish soap
and useful items intermingled with houseplants.
Change Out Cabinet and
Drawer Hardware
Another simple and
inexpensive but high-impact option is to replace the hardware on the kitchen
drawers and cabinets. It's a great way to infuse personality into your space,
especially if you can find vintage pieces - local estate sales can be a
treasure trove for those items. If that's not an option, look online for
colorful, decorative drawer pulls and knobs.
