Starting nursery is a huge milestone. Your son or daughter will need to adjust to a new environment, meet new people and make new friends. They will also have to get used to a new routine and become more independent. These changes can feel overwhelming to your child; however, there are lots of ways you can support them through this transition. Here are some helpful tips from a Montessori Nursery in London…
Take your child to visit the nursery
Take your child
to visit your chosen nursery as early as possible, to help them adjust to their
new surroundings. Go along to open days and events at the nursery, to allow
your child to meet their teachers and explore the grounds. Most nurseries
suggest a ‘settling in a day’ where you accompany your child on their first day.
Build their confidence
Your child is bound to feel nervous about starting their new nursery. Reassure your child that lots of their classmates will be feeling the same, and tell them they can help those children by asking them to play. Focus on all of the positives that the nursery will bring and talk to your child about the exciting things they can look forward to. Remember to emphasise how grown up they are – this will help to boost their confidence.
Teach them independence
Finally, one of
the most important things you can do to prepare your child for nursery is teaching them how to be independent. This means showing them how to do certain tasks by
themselves, such as dressing, going to the toilet, washing their hands, and tidying
up. You should also encourage your child to ask for help when they need it. The
more you help to advance their independence before they start nursery, the easier
it will be for them to settle in.
